Dr Catherine McCarthy


Dr. Catherine McCarthy is registered with AHPRA as a Clinical Psychologist and is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS). Catherine is registered to provide clinical psychology services through Medicare, WorkCover, CommCare, Department of Veterans Affairs and ADF Garrison Health Services.

Catherine completed her doctoral training at the University of East London, where she trained and worked in secondary and tertiary care adult and adolescent NHS teams, including a CMHT psychotherapy service for adults with enduring mental health difficulties. Since returning to Australia, she has worked in an early intervention service for psychosis and emerging personality disorders; and, with the military and first responders.

Catherine also holds masters degrees in health psychology and child and adolescent psychology. She previously worked at St Vincent’s Hospital’s USpace inpatient and day programme unit for young people, where she developed and was the lead therapist for a Schema Modes Therapy group and a Voices, Visions, Paranoia and Unusual beliefs group. She currently runs schema groups for adolescents and adults.

Clinical Experience

Catherine has a particular interest in working with mental health problems such as Complex PTSD/trauma, dissociation, psychosis, personality disorders, complex anxiety disorders and depression in adolescents and adults. Catherine is a member of the BPS Division of Clinical Psychology’s Faculty for Psychosis and Complex Mental Health. She has presented at conferences and workshops in Australia, UK and Europe, and has been published in a number of international journals.

Catherine has completed advanced training in individual and group schema therapy and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. She also regularly applies CBT and relational approaches. Catherine takes an evidence based approach which values collaboration, building a strong therapeutic relationship in which clients feel safe and understood, and, working together to develop an individualised formulation and treatment plan.
